D3600 Master Mechanic

Pre-requisites

Participants attending this course should have a thorough knowledge of diesel engine operation and repair procedures including large engine experience. Participants are asked to bring work clothing and safety shoes to class. Over 60% of this course will be in the workshop.

Course Equivalents

VILT D3600/C280 Master Mechanic (53408) and Hands-on D3600/C280 Master Mechanic (54266) are equivalent to D3600 Master Mechanic ILT (26244).

Course Outline

The D3600 Master Mechanic course educates experienced mechanics on the D3600/C280 family of Caterpillar engines. The main focus of this course is to remove and replace cylinder heads, pistons, liners, main bearings and camshaft segments. This is a very hands-on course that will teach the correct use of the 3600 special service tools including:

  1. Hydraulic tensioning equipment
  2. Cooling
  3. Lubrication
  4. Intake and exhaust system operation and maintenance
  5. MUI and EUI diesel fuel system operation and adjustment

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  1. Understand the basic operating principles of the D3600/C280 engine and components.
  2. Effectively research service information for D3600 engines.
  3. Remove and install a cylinder head.
  4. Remove and install a piston, connecting rod and cylinder liner.
  5. Remove and install a main bearing.
  6. Remove and install a camshaft segment and time the camshaft(s) to the crankshaft.
  7. Adjust the valves and valve bridges.
  8. Synchronize and time the unit injectors.
  9. Understand the operating principals of the MUI and EUI fuel system.
  10. Check the rack-stop setting and synchronize the governor or actuator to the engine.
  11. Explain the internal and external flow of engine coolant and lube oil and explain temperature control of those systems.
  12. Service the main and centrifugal oil filters.
  13. Understand maintenance procedures and when to perform.
